What is this WordPress CMS anyway?

What is this WordPress CMS anyway? What is a CMS? Here is the elevator version. Haberdashery, Sporting Goods, Ladies Wear … going up!

A CMS (Content Management System), like WordPress, is a user-friendly platform that allows you to build and manage a website without the need to code. It provides a visual interface for creating content, stores everything in a database, and offers features like plugins and pre-designed templates. A CMS is ideal if you have a lot of people contributing to your website as editors, shop managers, etc.

WordPress first appeared in 2003 as a blogging CMS with 1 theme.  Today WordPress offers about 10,000 themes and almost 60,000 plugins. Twenty years after launching, WordPress now powers almost half of every live website! That’s over 835 million sites.

I have built more than 300 websites in WordPress, and I know from experience that there are pros and cons to the system.  Like any other system.

Hot Tip: Even if you use a CMS for your website, it is still a very good idea to know basic HTML and CSS.

    Some great things about WordPress?

The first thing I can say is that WordPress was the first CMS to offer a standard and Responsive theme (2013). This was a really big thing back in 2013. For this reason I began moving from Drupal and Joomla!, to WordPress.

    • + WordPress is a perfect CMS for individuals, small businesses, and non-profits.
    • + WordPress is incredibly easy to learn. For most people, compared with other CMS, WordPress is simple to operate and convenient to use.
    • + WordPress is free to download and, unless you are using a plugin or theme which costs money, the plugins and themes are free to use as well.

WordPress, Drupal, Joomla! … the question is really “What do you want your website to do for you?”

Like anything you do, you should use the tools necessary for the project you are doing. Why use a bulldozer when all you really need is a good shovel? (More on that in Do you NEED a CMS?)

What About Hosting my WordPress Website?

Where do you host your WordPress website? One option is a shared hosting account, which is what most of us have. GoDaddy and others offer cheap, easy, website hosting packages. I use Strato shared hosting for my websites here in Germany.

On the other side are managed hosting packages; more expensive, but faster and with better support. You get what you pay for.

If you have an online shop or a website where many users are engaging in many interactions, I would recommend a managed hosting package. My partner, Bridget Willard and I use managed hosting for our websites in the USA.

Here’s a quick explanation of shared vs managed WordPress hosting:

The key difference is that managed hosting provides more WordPress-specific features, optimization, and support, while shared hosting is a more basic and affordable option where you handle most site management yourself.

Ultimately, shared hosting is better for small sites and beginners on a budget, while managed hosting is ideal for larger, business-critical WordPress sites that need enhanced performance, security and support.
