SEO Online: Learn Search Engine Optimisation

Last Updated on April 8, 2024

Let’s talk about SEO and why you need it.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) takes a website built by humans and makes it easily understandable to search engine robots. If you offer the solution to someone’s problem, but they have not heard of you, SEO gets your name in front of them. That’s it!

Want a doughnut? Most of us do. However, are we looking for a Doughnut or a Donut? How about regional variations? It could be a Berliner, a Krapfen, a Long John, Sufganiyot, a Bombolone, or even a Pfannkuchen. A better question is, WHY do you want a donut in the first place?

Are you looking for photos of Donuts, inflatable toys for the pool or something colourful to place on your head? Do you want a Donut to go? Or do you want to find a cafe where you can eat it? How about a Cheeseburger Donut? A Donut recipe? A Donut machine to make yours at home?

If you are selling Donuts on your website, you may want to think about exactly these things. And that’s where SEO comes in, specifically what we call Organic SEO, or Organic Search.

Did I tell you about the Berlin donut store you were searching for? Is this how you searched for the donut store? Is this a lead or an organic search? See, not all SEO is the same, which makes it exciting and horribly painful at the same time.

    Focus: On-Page SEO

    SEO consists of three parts:

    • On-page optimization (SEO in connection with the pages, posts and media on your website = relevance).
    • Off-page optimization (SEO related to your social media, reviews and links to your website = importance).
    • Technical optimization (SEO related to the performance of your website = security).

On-Page SEO. Our websites. There are two ways our websites connect with SEO – before people visit, and after. Another way of looking at that is – what attracts people to my website and what keeps them there.

Getting people onto our website is what we see in the SERPs – and other places like social media or ads. Basically a title, some text, a link, and perhaps an image. We need to optimise for that.

Once they are on our website we need to optimise what keeps them on our website for more than 3 seconds. That means content and UX. The type of content people want is different depending on their intent. The type of layout that people like. So, an ecommerce website onpage SEO is differrnt from a blog website SEO. The intent is different, as is the process. So, the elements (layout, content, steps) are different.

No one is an SEO expert

Don’t be fooled. SEO and the online marketing ecosystem change too much and all the time. What hasn’t changed is getting in front of people. Let them know you are there. You can do that with a sign.

It is important to enjoy it, have fun and learn something that assists you. That’s why Bettina and I teach – we want people to enjoy learning something they can use for their business.
