Hungry for Some SEO Tips? Here’s an SEO Appetizer for Your Business

Last Updated on May 31, 2023

I was once a full-time chef. That’s right. You can check that out right here on my chocolate website. As a chef, I know how crucial seasoning is to the success of a dish. When cooking, you need to balance the right amount of salt, pepper, herbs and spices to create a harmonious flavour profile. You have to consider what wine will be consumed with the food too. You even need to consider what will be eaten before and after each dish.

It’s not much different when planning your business’s marketing strategy – all of your online marketing is connected. Nothing stands alone. For this reason, your business must carefully consider the importance of SEO in your online marketing strategy.

SEO is a lot like the seasoning in a dish: you can serve your dishes without any salt and pepper, but your guests and your bottom line will be happier if you add some.

    What is Search Engine Optimisation?

SEO is like cooking and baking – a mixture of science, emotion, and something for your customer’s eyes, ears, and tongue.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art and science of improving a website’s visibility on search engines like Google, Bing, and others. SEO requires a dash of marketing, a pinch of psychology, and a large dollop of patience.

Successful SEO involves a combination of technical and creative strategies aimed at improving the visibility of your brand, and the quantity and quality of traffic to your website.

Your online marketing can be seen, heard, and talked about. SEO helps get you in front of people.

    • + SEO matches the intent of searchers with the intent of your website
    • + SEO improves the credibility and trust of your online brand
    • + SEO connects and leverages all your other online marketing work

Just as seasoning enhances the flavour of a dish, SEO enhances the online presence of your business. Without proper seasoning, a dish is bland and unappetizing. Similarly, without proper SEO, your business can be virtually invisible to potential online customers.

Why is SEO Important for my Online Marketing?

Neglecting SEO in your marketing mix is like preparing a meal without fresh ingredients.

The importance of SEO in online marketing can’t be overstated. In today’s digital age, everyone – small businesses, nonprofits, and schools – need a strong online presence to compete in the marketplace.

With millions of websites, social media platforms, and email newsletters vying for attention, a company that neglects SEO is essentially dropping an iron skillet on their foot.

Having a blog brings you SEO and engagement benefits PLUS adds to your content marketing
    • + Search Engines index and make available in the SERPs your social media activities, your products on Amazon, and your forum comments!
    • + Search Engines know what people are searching for better than you – let them help you!
    • + Unlike your food costs, SEO costs are 0% on the dollar!

SEO is about getting the right kind of traffic – the kind that is most likely to convert into customers. By targeting specific keywords and phrases, your business can attract visitors who are actively searching online for your products or services.

Think of it this way – if a restaurant serves an amazing dish but doesn’t promote it, no one will know about it. Similarly, if your business has a great website but doesn’t optimize it for search engines, it may never be found by potential customers.

SEO isn’t just about getting more traffic to your website either. SEO is about being found. If people have never heard of your business, but are looking for what you sell, SEO helps you get in front of them.

And, don’t forget the search engines! Google wants to E-E-A-T your content – so make it delicious!

How Can I Prepare a Balanced SEO Strategy?

Healthy SEO is a balance of On-Page, Off-Page, and Technical SEO.

Just as a chef balances the flavours in a dish to create a harmonious taste, your business must balance the technical and creative aspects of SEO to create a harmonious online presence.

This involves optimizing your website and social media. The content, structure, and even the code of your website need to be easy for search engines to crawl and index. You need to creat high-quality, engaging content that appeals to both search engines (who rank and place links to your website) and people (who will talk about and share your content on social media).

    • + Appetizer: On-Page SEO, which includes headings and subheadings, internal linking, and images and alt-text
    • + Main Course: Off-Page SEO, which includes link building, content marketing, social media marketing, guest posts, podcasting and video marketing.
    • + Dessert: Tech SEO, which is the process of optimizing a website for search engines, but it can also include activities meant to improve user experience.
    • + After dinner drinks: PPC – Google Ads. SEO is free, but paid ads give you valuable keyword insights and top of the page visibility. Think of it as an extra slice of cheese on your hamburger!

Seasoning is not just about adding salt and pepper to a dish. Similarily, optimising your website and social media is not just about a cool theme or a funny meme.

Success in the kitchen is about finding the right combination of spices and herbs to create a unique and memorable flavour. Similarly, SEO is not just about stuffing a website with keywords. It’s about creating a comprehensive strategy that takes into account the unique needs and goals of your business.

Is there an SEO Recipe for Success?

No one dish can please everyone. Except perhaps tacos, right? SEO is the same.

There’s no one SEO tactic that will guarantee success. Just like a good menu, good SEO contains many items, all balanced together to make an appealing product that attracts customers.

It’s not called a Hamburger Menu for nothing. The simple burger packs a lot into one package!
    • + SEO takes time. Give yourself 3 to 6 months.
    • + SEO requires insight. Find out what keywords your target audience are using not just what keywords are trending.
    • + SEO is never done. What people look for changes. Just like food trends. Review your SEO strategy quarterly.

By carefully crafting a comprehensive SEO strategy, your business can improve your visibility on search engines and social media, attract more targeted traffic, and ultimately, increase your bottom line.

One of the most important aspects of SEO is link building. Just as a chef might garnish a dish with fresh herbs to add colour and flavour, your business must build high-quality links to your website to improve yourr visibility on search engines. You also need to be engaging and present on social media.

Imagine you never went out to greet your guests or ask them how their meal was? Unimaginable. Link Building involves creating shareable content, reaching out to partners, suppliers, customers and the community, and building relationships with other websites in your industry.

A happy guest will tell people about their great meal. An ignored guest will tell even more people!

In SEO jargon, linking building is refered to as getting Backlinks.

“You shouldn’t buy or trade backlinks, but there may be a website where a link to your page makes good, helpful sense. Reach out to the owner of the site. You can also add the link to your page in the comments of relevant forums and websites – in a constructive and non-spammy way. Be helpful.” 9 Simple Website Indexing Tips

Can We Offer You an After Dinner Drink?

Don’t drink and drive, and Don’t try to trick people or bots.

The importance of SEO for your online marketing can’t be overstated. Just as seasoning is essential to the success of a dish, SEO is essential to the success of a business.

Just remember not to over season. Optimizing your content on a daily basis in the hopes of tricking Google and co into revisiting your website is not a good idea. Neither is tagging your social media posts with trending hashtags that have nothing to do with your product.

SEO, just like Social Media, is a type of relationship. It depends on trust and develops well over time.

Just as a chef takes the time to carefully season a dish, you must take the time to carefully consider the importance of SEO in your online marketing strategy. By doing so, you can create a delicious and memorable online presence that will attract and retain customers for years to come.
